November SOCALshowbiz is about skin, family, & the movies!

Every month I  publish SOCALshowbiz, I am reminded about how many amazing people are in our business.  Lucky me, I get to share their stories with you.

This month we feature Nina Greville, a former Brit, who came to America and established herself as a premier makeup artist, airbrush tattoo artist, and face and body painter.  Also, Jack O’Halloran, a tough kid from the streets of the northeast who has made it to the big screen in some 25 movies and is now an author of Family Legacy, a fictionalized version of his life as the son of a noted crime family boss.  Until you read his story, I promise, you don’t know Jack! And Larry Porricelli, one of the smartest, well liked, and respected guys in the movie exhibition industry in southern California.  His long history with Edwards Cinemas and Regency Theaters allows him to provide inside information about the development of the megaplex and the return to more intimate theater-going experiences.

Three terrific people with different but interesting journeys of their road to success.  Again, you will find their stories at SOCALshowbiz.  Enjoy.

The Genius Of Victor Harwood

Over the last month I have been profuse in my admiration of Victor who founded Digital Hollywood some 17 years ago. Please read my SOCALshowbiz article about him at http://www.socalshowbiz.com/resources-trade-shows/147-victor-harwood While already conducting the premier digital content delivery conference, Victor continues to update and freshen these conferences every six months, inviting the most current and bleeding edge experts in digital content delivery.

Okay, now for the really genius stuff. For last week’s Digital Hollywood conference in Marina del Rey, Victor created an Urban Media Summit, a series of about 16 sessions over four days, with only subject headers, no speakers assigned. Through his broad range of contacts, he created an advisory board led by Quincy Jones, Russell Simmons, Roland Martin, Ice Cube, and 15 other industry leaders and some 25 speakers. While no session, other than a dinner hosted by Quincy Jones, had speakers announced, every session was packed, standing room only, I assume by word of mouth. A List of some of the leadership involved can be found at http://www.digitalhollywood.com/UrbanSummit.html

The few sessions I was able to wedge my way into for even a short time, were spectacularly good. The speakers were all experts in their field, articulate, and much appreciated by audiences that consisted of every race and creed under the rainbow. The attendees that crowded into these sessions are serious artists and executives developing ways to promote their art and make a living at the same time. What energy, what genius. Thank you Victor.

Transition to SOCALshowbiz is complete

Now that the transition to SOCALshowbiz www.SOCALshowbiz.com from OCShowbiz is complete, I want to thank a few people in particular who made this possible with virtually no hiccups. First and foremost, thanks to Will Ashworth who hosts my websites. He dealt with all of the issues of reassigning IP addresses, tons of redirects to keep all links past and present working, and a myriad of other behind the scenes things that needed to be done so that we were never down. Will can be reached at moc.g1337468102nitlu1337468102snoch1337468102trowh1337468102sa@ll1337468102iw1337468102 if you need reliable, reasonable hosting, need to buy a domain name, or require programming services.

Also thanks to three of my Joomla Meetup colleagues:

Robert Coomes moc.l1337468102iamg@1337468102semoo1337468102cpr1337468102 who is a brilliant programmer and knows just about everything under the hood about Joomla and assorted extensions that anyone would want to know
Grace McKay al.se1337468102rutci1337468102pcirt1337468102cele@1337468102ecarg1337468102 who has created about a half dozen Joomla sites and has kicked my butt mercilessly to make sure I did the conversion.
Caprice de Lorn moc.s1337468102ngise1337468102dmrol1337468102ed@mr1337468102oledc1337468102 who showed me how to get the rainbow affect in the lettering of the new logo

AND to Beverly Lee the organizer of the local Joomla Meetup http://www.meetup.com/Joomla-Website-Meetup/ for founding and hosting our monthly Joomla meetings (Laguna Niguel)

Biz Bash Expo Rocks

Earlier this week the annual West Coast Biz Bash Expo was held at the Pasadena Convention Center and drew over 1000 professional event planners.  This is a first time for me at the Expo but I will surely return for future expos.  I sat in on several panels and all participants were of high quality both in their knowledge and ability to express themselves in an easy to understand manner.  The keynote speaker, Hillary Harris, Exec Dir Special Events at Warner Bros. Entertainment Group was brilliant and entertaining.

Anyone serious about being an Event Planner professional needs to follow the Biz Bash organization http://www.bizbash.com/losangeles/tradeshow/postshow.php  This is a close knit community and all seem willing to share knowledge and be supportive.
